The Silkworms of Liang Shaoji

Just as the title suggests, the creative practice of Liang Shaoji - one of China’s greatest contemporary artists - has always been tangled up with silkworms, not simply material that the artist uses to create his works but a source of inspiration, trait d’union between the rhythms of nature and humanity, poetic symbol of biology, in this case, applied to art. For the occasion, curator Hou Hanru has chosen a rich array of immersive installations, photos and videos, thus revisiting the last 30 years of the creative trajectory of Liang Shaoji - from Nature Series in 1988 which documents the first studies and explorations, to the iconic Bed, work displayed at the Biennial of Venice, up to more introspective and philosophical installations like Huge Chain: The Unbearable Lightness of Being. The exhibition also gives space to works created specifically for the spatial characteristics of PSA, as well as interdisciplinary pieces which blend art with the constant interest of Liang for sciences like biology.
