The West Bund Art & Design Fair is situated in one of the new nerve centres of contemporary art in Shanghai, the neighbourhood of West Bund - in the past, it was home to one of the largest airports in East Asia, with hangars and aeronautic factories; now, it’s a cluster of museums, galleries, foundations and architectural studios - and the fair itself is a gathering of the most important realities of international contemporary art and design, with an eye for local galleries that consider the fair a point of reference. Among the most interesting activities xiàn chăng (literally meaning on site), sections constituted by personal presentations by international artists with events both inside and outside the West Bund Art Center - headquarters of the fair - in the entire West Bund area and at the urban home of the participating galleries. The works on display include a vast gamma of mediums, from painting to sculpture, from video to installations. There are also a series of special projects, exhibitions organised in various locations with the participating galleries, international and Chinese curators and a section dedicated to video art. The design section of the fair, meanwhile, offers a look at the most interesting of contemporary design - from jewellery to furnishings.
